Cyber News: Facebook Fined $11.3M for Privacy Violations in Europe.

Abstract

“Facebook emphasizes the free nature of the service but not the commercial objectives that underlie the provision of the social network service, thus inducing users into making a transactional decision that they would not have taken otherwise,” the ICA said in a notice on Friday.

“The information provided is, in fact, general and incomplete and does not adequately make a distinction between the use of data to personalize the service (in order to connect ‘consumer’ users with each other) and the use of data to carry out advertising campaigns aimed at specific targets.”

The authority also found that Facebook, in violation of Articles 24 and 25, actively sends consumer data to third-party websites and apps for commercial purposes, by default and without express consent. Additionally, when users decide to limit their consent, they are faced with significant restrictions on the use of the social network. Inducing users to “maintain the pre-selected choice” represents “undue influence,” according to the ICA, and prevents users from being able to make a free, informed choice.

CyberSecurity: How chatbots are a new threat to democracy?

Since social media has become a media platform & news streams, Crooks & Politician, criminals etc started to exploit that. Some people argue that main stream media is so unfair & biased and social media is a way to contact their followers.

To go with this logic, Crooks started to buying trolls & trollers. These trollers are the human & they create fake agenda. If you closely see how facebook, twitter etc are full of trolls & fake news or funny cartoons, vedios. In Reality, Crooks set the agenda whom they wish to target in social media today.  Political parties are having IT cell as department to spread their message whether that is true or false does not matter.

There are IT companies who have a department to serve these crooks & politicians. They create thousands of fake accounts & dominate the real conversation going between few people. These fake accounts are created smartly & have local language or message as well. And, They just flood the bunch of messages & confuse people on every topic. It is done by every political party in large nowadays.

Buying trollers are costly & it is an ongoing investment for all the crooks & politicians. So, In the coming days, It would not be wrong to say that People would look for cheaper & effective options & that could be a Chatbots.

Read full opinion about Chatbots & how it could be a dangerous

Abstract

Chatbots are software programs that are capable of conversing with human beings on social media using natural language. Increasingly, they take the form of machine learning systems that are not painstakingly “taught” vocabulary, grammar and syntax but rather “learn” to respond appropriately using probabilistic inference from large datasets, together with some human guidance.

Most political bots these days are similarly crude, limited to the repetition of slogans like “#LockHerUp” or “#MAGA.” But a glance at recent political history suggests that chatbots have already begun to have an appreciable impact on political discourse. In the buildup to the midterms, for instance, an estimated 60 percent of the online chatter relating to “the caravan” of Central American migrants was initiated by chatbots.

CyberSecurity: WhatsApp phishing – List of scams

I wrote a post how fake WhatsApp messages are being circulated in festival seasons. And, social media is a good platform to target individuals. All you need is to just provide an interesting offer/heading in the message. Most of the people don’t think twice before clicking on it. And, Hacker just needs one click. How one single click can make your life miserable. Read my post here

https://followcybersecurity.com/2018/11/12/one-click-thats-all-someone-needs/

Hers the list of all phishing Whatsapp scams going on.

  • A viral WhatsApp message asked users to click on a link to take part in the giveaway of 3,000 free Adidas shoes on the occasion of Adidas’ 93rd anniversary
  • Like the Adidas scam, fashion brand Zara’s free voucher is another WhatsApp scam. The WhatsApp text asks users for their personal details and contacts
  • Fee pizzas on click
  • Get Rs 1000  recharge on clicking on the link.
  • Get your battery full in a min by clicking on the link.
  • Martinelli video which hacks your phone.
  • Amazon shopping deals & offers. Similarly for other offers from many other eCommerce vendors.
  • fake WhatsApp versions for better features etc.

CyberSecurity: Common-Knowledge Attacks on Democracy

Must read research on how cyber attacks & Fake news are undermining democracies. These attacks are not changing the election voting machine & other infrastructure, However, changing the views to a larger extent. Political parties or opponents are using cyber technology to spread their propaganda. And, the situation is so bad that nobody likes to have a democratic discussion. Everybody is correct & accurate with their sources. The biggest damage is done using social media & news.

Abstract

Common-knowledge attacks can have critical consequences yet they are a poor fit with conventional national security approaches to cybersecurity. National security officials traditionally think about cybersecurity using Cold War concepts that were developed to understand nuclear weapons. They use ideas such as the offence-defence balance, conventional deterrence theory, and deterrence by denial.

This attack on public confidence in election results was thwarted at the last moment. Even so, it provided the model for a new kind of attack. Hackers don’t have to secretly alter people’s votes to affect elections. All they need to do is to damage public confidence that the votes were counted fairly. As researchers have argued, “simply put, the attacker might not care who wins; the losing side believing that the election was stolen from them may be equally, if not more, valuable.”
